Getting a handle on the future of information technology (IT) is like walking through quicksand. As soon as we get used to one device or software, something new comes along.
Although technology has revolutionized the way we do business, are we really using technology to the greatest benefit of our business? Probably not yet, but the trend is toward accessing more sophisticated technology to help integrate all business functions.
Paradigm shift
Over the past two years companies of all sizes have shifted focus from internal IT systems to more sophisticated external systems. With IT infrastructures in place, companies are looking for ways to tie their customers, suppliers and vendors into their systems, allowing for greater ease of use.
The shift in focus is partly due to the events of the past two years. Once the Internet bubble burst, tremendous consolidation occurred in the IT field of software, hardware and solutions providers, says Sassan Hejazi, IT practice leader at Kreischer, Miller & Co. and professor of management systems at Arcadia University in Philadelphia. Only the strongest of those companies survived.
